ICYMI SWTOR Expansion Announcement – Additional Details

It’s a brand new, epic story, with some exciting co-op content to it” – James Ohlen

At The Minds Behind EA’s Star Wars Games Panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe, James Ohlen officially announced Star Wars the Old Republic’s next Expansion. The title for the expansion Knights of the Eternal Throne was revealed in a Trailer they made celebrating 5 Years of SWTOR, along with artwork featuring Senya and a cloaked individual (possibly Vaylin?).

Comicbook.com’s Lucas Seigal interviewed James Ohlen about the KOTET expansion at SWCE. One particularly interesting bit of information revealed concerned group content:

Of course, The Old Republic is still an MMO, and Ohlen said there will be “a lot of great co-op and multiplayer challenges” included in Eternal Throne. The story focus is there, similar to Fallen Empire, but they redoubled their efforts to make the expansion attractive for their loyal subscriber base as well.

If only James had mentioned this at the Panel.

Of course, we don’t know for sure what James means by “a lot of great co-op and multiplayer challenges”. Note in the last July Producer Livestream on the 30th June, Ben Irving said then that they were working on group content but refused to say whether it was Operations, Flashpoints or Warzones. For all we know it could just be Star Fortress or Eternal Championship style group content..

We know the player community wants more Operations. Will the Devs give the players what they want?

Blachloch was kind enough to ask the Devs, at SWCE, for further clarification on what they meant by this. He spoke to Charles Boyd who said that there was nothing new to announce and that was up to the marketing team when they were going to announce more info.

Another important bit of information, in the article, concerns the possible monetary cost of the new Expansion:

While it will be playable on its own (you don’t have to play “Fallen Empire” to do so), anyone who purchases Eternal Throne will have access to Fallen Empire

So it seems possible (based on the wording) that Eternal Throne will be a paid for expansion, like Shadow of Revan, rather then free like Fallen Empire.

This does lend further to the possibility that there will actually be multiplayer content. Note that previous paid for expansions had both Operations and Flashpoints included in them.

I guess we will have to wait for confirmation to know for sure. But in the meantime, I’ll be keeping my expectations low.

We can possibly expect to learn more about Eternal Throne (hopefully not too long) after Chapter 16 of Fallen Empire is released.

Eternal Throne is expected to launch Fall 2016.

What do you make of what James Ohlen said? Do you think there will be decent group content? What do you think of the prospect of having to pay for the new expansion?

Just make KOTOR 3 already. This engine is shit and doesn’t do a KOTOR-esque game justice in 2016.
